In an economy plagued by cutbacks and job layoffs, looking for a second source of income is often considered by many people. Perhaps the best place to start is in the exciting field of data entry. You might have wondered if is possible to do such work part-time for an employer or as a self-employed contractor. The answer is Yes!
While most businesses have at least one physical location for data entry work, such as First Data, Merkle, and other communications companies, it's possible to apply to such companies and do freelance or seasonal work from your home.
How much money can you actually earn? The truth is, if you have excellent typing and computer entry skills, you can earn more than what your last job paid you per hour. Most data entry jobs will start between $8-$15 per hour and some more experience job listings pay anywhere from $15-$30 per hour.
What is required to get started? A computer with an Internet connection, the ability to type, and some free time on your hands.
There are many different types of jobs. For example, a virtual office assistant produces and maintains spreadsheets and business literature such as PDF documents, word processing, etc. for a company. Most of the work is already done, and just requires you to reproduce it in a fancy format easy for them to read and understand.
Another type of data entry is working as a data collection agent or a research assistant. In this field, you will be asked to view websites and other online programs and review your findings into reports designed to appeal to a company. Often times this will deal with press releases or some type of comparison with another company.
Perhaps one of the most popular forms services is audio transcriptions. Essentially you listen to audio transcriptions via tape, digital recording, CD, video, or some other form of media, and then type what you hear into some sort of text format. This may include speeches, focus group discussions, meetings, and much more.
One of the more prominent positions writing online content for companies and entrepreneurs. There's always a need for constant fresh content online; and in this field, you will be tasked with creating articles based on a company's specific content needs. In most cases this sort of position is done alongside a proofreader who's jobs is to proofread articles for language and grammar, then edit and produce the article to be published correctly.
While this industry and vast and exciting, you must take the work seriously. Superb knowledge of the language for which you are doing data entry is very important, and in most cases, grammar and punctuation must be your forte so the company does not have to spend extra to hire a proofreader or copyeditor.
