To look at some of the advertisements for work at home jobs you see around the Internet, they look like they are going to let you make money hand over fist. Is it possible though that these money making ideas are too good to be true? Can you really make thousands of dollars every month with no skills and almost no investment needed? Let's look at how these operate and try to see if they sound suspicious.
One of the most popular ones is a video advertisement of a good-looking woman who claims to be a stay-at-home mom and who says that with no more than an hour invested each day working at her stay-at-home job, she can easily make $10,000 a month. What does she do to make this money, you ask? According to her, she posts links for the popular search engines, nothing more. All they ask of you to place wonderful work-at-home jobs like this in your lap are a few dollars for an information kit that they send you. So is this a scam? Yes, but not because they ask you for money for the kit. That's usually very modest. In the course of placing an order for the kit, somewhere along the the pages of printed agreements that you casually click on, is buried a little statement that says you authorize them to charge your credit card every month for some useless product or the other. And it can be impossible to cancel that regular charge. It doesn't matter what kind of work-at-home jobs they have in mind for you - paid surveys, data entry jobs or secret information on how to obtain a government grant - all they are after is your credit card number so that they can charge it every month. Usually, the only people who fall for these scams are poor elderly people.
So how do you know which are the genuine work-at-home jobs and which are the scams? If it seems that the work requires very little from you in return for generous pay, it's probably a scam. What you can do to make sure it is aboveboard is, to contact your local Better Business Bureau to see if anyone's been reporting the scheme that has your eye. One particularly well-known scam artist is the company known as Money Mastery. This company puts out repeated offers for all kinds of employment. All it's ever after is your credit card number so it can charge it and keep charging it.
As a general rule, any kind of job that involves coupon programs, envelope stuffing, clicking on links on the Internet, package forwarding and so on, turn out to be scams. Never pay anything for work-at-home jobs even if the price they charge is pretty modest - they are after your credit card number so that they can keep charging you. If their contact information doesn't seem rock solid, that's a pretty good sign too.

"I've gotten so lazy that all that I want to do is work at home. I don't want to do any work at all but I still want to make money. I mean, I still have to pay the bills. I'm a fairly intelligent person. I should be able to find some way to stay at home and make money. What to do...
Let's see. Well, I've noticed this thing called the internet. Didn't I read somewhere that the internet is an untapped market? Isn't it the new frontier? Maybe I'll start looking around."
The above thoughts were mine a few years ago. I started looking around the internet for these work at home or telecommuting opportunities. One of the first things that I noticed is that these work at home opportunities seemed too good to be true. I was bombarded with such things as:
"$200 to $1000 per day. No experience necessary. Direct deposit to your bank."
"Medical billing at home. Start your medical billing career. Free info."
"Legitimate work at home opportunities. Start today. Accepting applications in your area."
Now I'm a suspicious person by nature. I can pretty much see through the (well you know.) I clicked on a number of these links presented to me to read up on these wondrous opportunities. The websites that these links took me to were brilliant. Great big letters telling me I can be making big money just by using their system, software, service, and more. I was told about the Johnson family's yacht and million dollar mansion. They got it just by working at home.
I think that you can see the trend here.
Yes there are some legitimate work at home jobs out there. You just need to be careful and not fall for the "Great Work at Home Scam." As the owner of a free job board I have come across all kinds of scams like the ones noted above.
Here are some of the things to look for to identify these scams:
There is no such thing as "typing at home" or "data entry at home" jobs
About 95% of the jobs that claim to be home typist or home data entry jobs are scams. The so called "employer" reels you in by posts on free job boards or forums. The post typically will mention a one time materials fee or instruction manual fee. After you pay this fee (if the instructions do arrive) you are instructed to copy and paste the same message in forums and free job boards but request the money be sent to you instead. It is a perpetual scam because many people feel like they want their money back and the only way to get it back is to try the system. It's not worth the time or the money. You'll be spending the majority of your day trying to find forums or job boards that will let you post these scams and the rest of your day avoiding angry emails.
What is the email address for the employer?
Is it myemail @ gmail.com or myemail324 @ yahoo.com? These work at home scam artists don't want give out their real email address so they use free email accounts given out by some of the major search engines. If they start getting nasty emails requesting their money back they simply get rid of one email address and get another one. An email address like myemail@mycompany.com where "mycompany" is a company that you may have heard of is probably a legitimate email.
Does the employer have a website?
Having a website doesn't give legitimacy to the employer. Having a website with a valid way to contact them, a frequently asked questions section, and a professional looking layout does help to boost confidence in their opportunity. Send an email to the email address listed on the contact page or via the contact form. Did you get a response in a timely manner? Did they answer your concerns? Does it sound fishy? If you have any apprehension at all you should steer clear.
Why does the employer need my money?
Doesn't this sound absurd? Well it really is. Employers should pay you money. This should trigger your spider sense from the beginning. Never give an employer money unless you are absolutely sure that it is for a legitimate cause. If you feel that it is for a valid reason, see if the employer will accept a check. When you write a check and mail it you have at least a couple of days to stop payment. If they don't accept a check; why? A simple rule of thumb is you should be making money not paying money.
I really, really want to work at home. What can I do?
As I stated before there are some legitimate work at home opportunities. These are typically freelance positions where you are hired as a contractor and where you use your existing skills such as drafting, programming, graphics design, sign making, knitting, etc. These are tangible skills that you can use to market yourself to employers that do hire contractors or off site employees. Search out these types of employers and you won't have to worry about getting caught up in the "great work at home scam."

Voice Over Work - Why Only a Few Voiceover Artists Seem to Get Most of the Jobs

Here is an eye catching statistic: 80% of voice over work is done by just 20% of voice over talent. In other words the vast majority of voice jobs go to a minority of voice over artists.
So why is this? Why does this successful elite seem to clean up when it comes to getting the work?
You are probably saying to yourself it is because all the good work goes to famous actors - you hear them all the time on TV and radio commercials. But in reality this simply is not the case. To begin with commercials constitute less than 10 percent of voice over jobs; most of the work is in other areas such as audiobooks, narration, trailers and especially corporate work.
Also, next time you are watching television flick through the channels and just count the number of famous voices you hear on adverts, programmes, continuity announcements and so on. How many can you name? Sure there will be the celebs whose voices leap out at you, but what about the rest? Do you know who they are? Probably not, but I DO know they are jobbing voice over artists. So replace the word 'famous' with the word 'working' - they are working voice over people. And they make up part of that top 20%.
When I started training people to do voice overs, I would try to guess who would be the most successful. I based my assumptions on who sounded the best and read the scripts with the most confidence. But after a few months it became apparent that my assumptions were very wide of the mark.
I discovered that the students getting the most voice over work and jobs were not necessarily the ones who had the finest showreels or demos. It was quite the opposite in fact. It seemed to be those who had marketed their talents well and really promoted their voices were getting the best jobs, but were not necessarily brilliant voice talents.
It is no good recording a cracking showreel if no one is going to hear it. Too many voice over artists just sit back and wait for clients to find THEM! Of course, it does not work like that; YOU have to go looking for the work. You can give yourself a helping hand by joining a voice over market place, but you must also start recording at home.
Most important of all be a business; treat your voice over career just like you would if you were selling software or motor vehicles. Sell, sell, sell.
These days you do not need a big, expensive recording studio to get going. You already have the basic bit of kit..... it is your computer. Recording software is freely available on the internet, so all you need to buy is a decent vocal microphone. You can even replicate studio acoustics by using pillows and duvets around the recording area.
So there is no excuse for being in that bottom 80%. If you have the drive, the tenacity and the desire there is no reason why you should should not earn money from your voice, become a star performer and move into that that top 20%.

UK Voice Over Work - Finding British Voiceover Jobs and Agents

Scan the internet for voice over work and you will be faced with an enormous array of sites offering voice training courses, advice about agencies and newcomers posting questions asking where and how to start in voice-overs. When you click on some of these sites, you will notice that many of them are based outside the United Kingdom.
So where do those of us with British accents find the work? One way is to refine the search, putting in keywords such as " UK voice over agency" or "voice over training in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham". You can be even more specific by mentioning your gender; so "female British voice over artist" and "male British voiceover UK based" will produce some interesting results.
However there are limitations to all of this. It assumes that voice over artists only achieve jobs and work in their country of residence; in the age of the internet this is certainly not the case. Those beginning their careers often find there is just as much (if not more) opportunity outside of Britain. There are a couple of reasons for this:
Inexpensive recording equipment means you can set up a mini studio at home with minimal outlay. You just need your computer, some software (free to download from the net) a microphone and sound deadening material. In the latter case, pillows duvets and curtains will work well in removing room ambience. So it does not matter where you live or indeed where your client is located, you can deliver a sound file from anywhere to anywhere.
The other reason is that international clients, especially in the US, Middle East and Europe, just love a genuine British accent. In many cases it adds cachet and gives a product upmarket appeal. If you have not made your showreel yet, ask your voice over coach to really bring out your natural tones and accentuate the accent, whether it is Home Counties BBC style, or you have a regional lilt such as 'Geordie', 'Scouse' or even 'Brummie.'
Casting your net far and wide is essential in the voiceover world of the 21st century; those who limit themselves to England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland are essentially cutting out huge swathes of potential work. But where do you find jobs in other countries? The best way is to use one of the excellent voice over marketplaces out there. These are not agencies, but places where you can sell your voice - they allow client and voice over artist to hook up via email, rather than meeting face to face or on the phone. Such encounters can lead to fruitful relationships that produce that most valuable of assets - repeat work.
However it is also advisable not ignore the domestic market. Keep a look out for new agents starting up and submit your voice reel to as many established players as possible. Also cold calling production companies can produce surprising results.
So keep your options wide open and broaden your voice over horizons.
